How NLP Can Improve Your Presentation Skills

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is often described as the methodology of how behaviour is created.

This methodology allows skilled NLP Practitioners to unpick how someone is specifically doing something.

They do this by identifying all the components that make up this particular behaviour.

This is known as a eliciting a behaviour strategy or what I sometimes call the ‘behaviour recipe’.

We are all unique and have our own special ways of doing things. Some of the things we do work really well and we achieve the results we want, and some don’t.

Identifying how someone does something well is known, in NLP terms as Modelling Success.

The value of using NLP skills to model success is, that as well as identifying what you can see and hear someone doing in the ‘Outside World’, you can find out what they are also doing in their ‘Inside World’ – the things you cannot see and hear. In other words you get the full picture of everything they do a achieve that success.

The things people do in their ‘Inside Worlds’ are:

  • Speak to themselves in their head?
  • Imaging seeing themselves doing something?
  • Think about how they will feel about doing something?

These are the things that make the difference between you doing something well or not.

The amazing fact is that most people don’t even consider the impact that their ‘Inside World’ has on their ability to do something well.

The way to replicate success is to find out complete behaviour strategy or ‘behaviour recipe’ of how someone is doing something really well, in both their ‘Outside and Inside Worlds’

When you have this ‘recipe’ other people can use it to achieve their success

Lets look at an example of Modelling Success for Successful Business Presentations

Here is the ‘behavioural recipe’ that I elicited from a client who always delivers successful presentations

In the ‘Outside World’ I observed and heard that she was:

  • Prepared and checked her equipment and material before she started
  • Spending time talking to people before she started her presentation
  • Smiling
  • Giving eye contact with the all of her audience
  • Looking confident
  • Speaking in a strong clear voice
  • Moving with purpose
  • Engaging with her audience
  • Telling stories and making people laugh
  • Sounding passionate about what she was speaking about

Using my NLP Skills and asking specific questions to identify what she was doing in her ‘Inside World’ I discovered that she was also:

  • Imagining seeing herself giving a great presentation
  • Imagining before she started, a big bright picture of herself standing in front of a completely engaged audience
  • Telling herself in her head(in a strong confident voice) “I get my key points across”
  • Marking out different places to stand on the stage, and mentally rehearsing what key point she will deliver when she moves to these different places
  • Imagining running a movie in her mind of her successfully completing her presentation, and receiving a standing ovation
  • Clapping her hands once, at the beginning of the presentation, to trigger a feeling of being super confident
  • Telling herself to keep looking at all members of her audience to help them feel included
  • Saying to herself, that just because people were not always looking in her direction did not mean that they were not listening.
  • Noticing that she is keeping her delivery energised and passionate
  • Having a few techniques to use spontaneously to keep the attention of her audience
  • Staying focused completely on delivering her message for the audience
  • Saying encouraging things to herself mentally during the presentation
  • Curious about where the people she is presenting to will use the information she is talking about
  • Always speaking to as many people as possible as they come into the room to connect with them to make them feel good before she starts her presentation. (She does this so that she sets up a rapport with members of the audience that she can use during her presentation)

From this example it is clear there was actually much more going on in this person’s ‘Inside World’ than what I was able to see and hear from just observing her ‘Outside World’.

Everything she does in her ‘Inside World’ contributes to her ability to deliver such successful presentations.

In business, we often ask people who are successful at something to show others how they do this, and then become frustrated when this success is not replicated.

This is because they are only giving people half of the ‘recipe’ – the part that can be seen on the ‘outside’.

When you have people in your business trained in NLP skills who can discover ‘behaviour recipe’ of your most successful employees you increase the chances of developing more success in our company.
